There is something we quietly take pride in: La Estancia is the last resort on this stretch of Busuanga still owned by someone who was born here. Almost everywhere else you'll stay in the Calamianes belongs to Manila families, or to investors from elsewhere in the Philippines and abroad. This land was not bought as a project. It was home first.

That matters more than it sounds. It means the person who decides how this place is run grew up with these tides, knows which months the wind turns, and has to live alongside the neighbours our choices affect. Nothing here is managed from a boardroom four hundred kilometres away.

Every member of our team is hired from the surrounding community — no imported crews, no seasonal contractors flown in. Some of them have been with us since this was still simply a family vacation home, long before there were guests to welcome. They looked after the place when it was ours alone, and they look after it now that it is yours for a few nights. When they tell you where the fireflies gather or which beach is best that afternoon, they aren't reciting a script. They grew up here too.

It is, we think, the reason a stay here feels less like checking into a resort and more like being taken in by a family — because in the most literal sense, that is what is happening.
